We put together the Team FLASCAR motto in the mid 1990’s, the name derived from the first four letters of Flash and the second syllable of Oscar; i.e. FLASCAR. Martin’s fathers name was Oscar; however, the nickname Flash was used most commonly.
Oscar grew up in Burr Oak Kansas in the 1940’s where he played high school football in the later years of his schooling. Due to his bigger size and attitude, he seemed to lag behind during the team’s daily exercise running around the track that surrounded the football field. The irony prevailed in the shelterbelt that lied on the far side of the end zones; when the team would enter the first turn, inevitably, Oscar would bring up the rear. However, when the team exited the corner, Oscar would be leading the way. Therefore, the coaches began calling him Flash because of the time it took him to go from last to first. Once he was out of the coaches watchful eyes, he simply took a shortcut behind the shelterbelt, avoiding the curve of the track, so he wasn’t running as far as his teammates.
A half century later, the tale lives on and has been coincided with the name of a race team. Team FLASCAR doesn’t represent anyone in particular, rather a group of people that help on the race cars, fans that support our endeavors each week, sponsors, friends, and family.
Thank you to the individuals and businesses that donated money for the Martin Newlin Memorial Stock Car Race.
